Dated Antique Afshar Tribal Rug. Afshar Tribes of South Persia. 178cm X 135cm.

Description

Unusual central shrub-like design with tribal motifs not that far off from item number sa1040745 that I have. Along with last images of a similar design in a publication.

It is dated 1333ah upper left side equating to 1914-15 and I would say from the dye colours it dates to the first quarter of the 20th century so have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the date on the rug.

Nice ivory ground colour. All ends and sides are secure with hand wash and de-dusting.

There is some light wear in places/ all woollen construction.

Priced accordingly.

Size is 5 foot 10 inches by 4 foot 5 inches. 178cm X 135cm. Fringes not measured in size.

Afshar rugs were woven by the nomadic and semi-nomadic Afshar tribe located predominantly in the Kerman province of south-east Persia. These textiles traditionally combine Turkic geometric elements with Persian floral motifs, reflecting the tribes migratory heritage and cultural influences.

Traditional Afshar carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, typically tied onto a wool or cotton foundation. The yarns were historically coloured using natural dyes derived from plants, madder root, indigo, and local minerals.
