Afshar Rug

19th century
Description

This is one of the best Afshar rugs I have had to date. The palette of colours is wonderfully rich and the wool soft and lustrous. It is unusual to see such a well preserved kilim ends which add to it’s beauty. The central field is filled with stylised flowers and leaves which are clearly separated into horizontal bands where the design abruptly stops and a thin line of the background blue draws the boundary. This separation reminds me of Kuba cloth with its overall design punctuated by horizontal or vertical lines. The multiple vibrant borders are a feature of Afshar rugs and do justice to the rich central field. Balance between border and field is important, the field should dominate but the border should enhance. I think this piece meets all of the criteria of a great rug and it will be one I sell with a heavy heart.

Good condition with just a little wear to the field and one small hole to the border. The ends and side are good and original.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Afshar rugs are hand-woven textiles produced by the nomadic and semi-nomadic Afshar tribe, historically located in south-western and south-eastern Iran. They are recognized for their distinct geometric design motifs, deep colour palettes, and durable construction.

These rugs are crafted using hand-spun wool for the pile, knotted onto either a wool or cotton warp and weft structure. The wool is dyed using traditional natural plant and mineral dyes to achieve rich, long-lasting tones.

Authentic Afshar rugs generally feature stylized geometric patterns, repeating diamond or lattice medallions, and multiple detailed border bands. They often show small asymmetrical weaver marks and flat-woven kelim ends along the fringe edges.

A hand-knotted tribal rug introduces warmth and texture when placed over natural wood flooring, stone, or concrete. It acts as an anchoring accent piece in modern, eclectic, or traditional room layouts.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only attachment to prevent breaking the wool fibers. Spills should be blotted immediately with a damp cloth, and periodic professional cleaning by a specialist rug restorer is recommended.
