Afshar Rug

19th century
Description

Afshar rugs are not uncommon but there is a lot of variation in quality. Pieces like this are the ones that excite me most with their fine knotting, strong colours and woollen foundation. They typically have bright red wefts and multiple bands of colour in the selvedge. This is a lovely example, the inner field a lattice of floral motifs interspersed with boteh is surrounded by a hypnotic array of lines. Closer inspection shows these line contain a snaking blue and yellow decoration to amplify the effect. The floral borders really make the rug for me. The main border is more intricate than appears on first sight and the ivory ground on the minor borders freshens the aspect of the rug. A great example of type with good age.

Some wear to the field with the odd glimpse of foundation. The weft wrapped ends are untidy at the top.

Afshar rugs are traditional hand-knotted textiles created by the nomadic and semi-nomadic Afshar tribe located predominantly in southwestern Iran. Known for their durability and distinctive stylised motifs, these rugs often combine geometric structures with floral or boteh patterns influenced by both Persian and Turkic weaving traditions.

Traditional Afshar carpets feature a pile made entirely of high-grade wool, hand-spun and dyed using natural vegetable and mineral sources. The foundation, consisting of the warp and weft, is typically woven from cotton or wool, resulting in a flexible yet heavy-duty textile.

Authentic Afshar rugs can be identified by their flexible, non-glued backing, asymmetrical hand-knotted structure, and subtle variations in colour known as abrash. They frequently display a central hexagonal field, repeat boteh motifs, and densely packed guard borders with hand-overcast side edges.

Tribal rugs are frequently used to anchor minimalist or contemporary rooms by adding geometric pattern and visual warmth. Positioning a rich crimson and navy rug over neutral hardwood, stone, or polished concrete flooring provides balance to sleek modern furniture.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid catching the wool fibres with a rotating beater bar. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean dry cloth, place a high-quality rug underlay underneath to prevent slipping, and employ professional textile cleaners for periodic washing.
