Khamseh Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

There is a lot to like about this rug. Khamseh rugs are often lively and this example is crammed with interesting motifs portrayed in great colours. The border is worthy of note with rows of peacocks looking into the inner field, the white background creates the perfect frame for the darker busier centre. I love the boteh that border the central field and then comes an explosion of motifs, flowers, trees and birds filling every available space around the central motif. It would bear a lifetime of study and it is one of those rugs that I find mesmerising. Great rugs are a sort of visual meditation and this is truly a great piece.

There is some moth damage, including small holes. There is also some wear across the centre.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Khamseh rugs are hand-knotted textiles woven by the Khamseh Confederation, a tribal alliance in southwestern Persia. These rugs feature geometric patterns, stylised flora and fauna, and deep colour palettes.

Khamseh rugs are typically hand-woven using wool yarn for both the pile and the foundation. Dyes were traditionally derived from natural plant and mineral sources, creating rich indigo blues and madder reds.

Authentic Khamseh rugs often feature dark wool warps, prominent geometric central medallions, and stylized bird motifs known as murgh motifs within the field and border.

A tribal Persian rug anchors neutral spaces by adding texture, historical character, and grounding tones beneath seating arrangements or in entryways.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush, and rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear and balanced light exposure.
