A French 18 karat (18K) yellow gold charm pendant designed as a shield of the coat of arms for the City of Paris, depicting a yacht or boat in full sail surrounded by a pierced laurel wreath, enhanced by plique-a-jour enamel work. Stamped with the eagle’s head for 18 karat gold and French manufacture, and an unknown maker’s mark.

The motto that goes with this coat of arms is "fluctuat nec mergitur" which translates as: "rocked (by waves), it does not sink".

A plique-a-jour enamel pendant is a piece of fine jewellery crafted using a technique where translucent enamel is applied into open metal wire cells without a backing. Popularised during the Art Nouveau era, this creates a stained-glass effect when light passes through the piece.

Plique-a-jour pieces typically feature high-carat gold or silver framework pierced or constructed with filigree wirework. Ground vitreous enamel powder is placed into the unbacked open cells and fired in a kiln at high temperatures to fuse into translucent glass.
