English Delftware was produced from the seventeenth through the eighteenth century in centres such as London, Bristol, and Liverpool. Created as an accessible alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, it featured opaque white tin glaze decorated with cobalt oxide paint.

Delftware was formed from earthenware clay covered with a lead glaze containing tin oxide, which created an opaque white surface when fired. Artisans painted designs onto the unfired tin glaze using mineral pigments, predominantly cobalt blue, before a single final firing.

Authentic pieces display characteristic edge wear or fritting where the fragile tin glaze chips away from the earthenware body. Key indicators include pinholes in the glaze, lightweight earthenware bodies, hand-painted brushwork variations, and an unglazed or lightly glazed reddish clay rim base.
