Interesting Mid C18th Brass-bound Solid Cedar Trunk or Coffer.

18th century
For Sale by M Lees and Sons
Description

Interesting mid C18th brass-bound solid cedar trunk or coffer.

The rectangular chest fitted with decorative shaped brass strapping to all sides, the ends having substantial heavy-gauge brass carrying handles with shaped back-plates. The interior of the single-piece lid with decorative brass strap hinges . Having the apparently original brass lock with working steel key and fitted with a shaped cast brass escutcheon plate .

In excellent original condition, having achieved a consistent ‘honey-coloured’ patina to the figured cedar wood . Minor marks and general wear commensurate with age, use and purpose.

Probably Dutch colonial ,although the shape of the back-plates of the carrying handles and use of cedar possibly allude to being of English manufacture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A brass-bound cedar coffer is a wooden storage chest constructed from cedar timber and reinforced with brass straps or corner brackets, historically favoured in the eighteenth century for protecting textiles against insects.

Cedar wood contains natural aromatic oils that repel moths and other pests, making it an ideal choice for storing clothing, linens, and household textiles.

Authentic eighteenth-century trunks feature hand-hammered brass fittings, hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron or brass locks, and evidence of historical hand-planing on the timber surfaces.

An antique cedar coffer serves as a functional centrepiece when placed at the foot of a bed, used as a coffee table in a living room, or positioned in an entryway for hidden storage.

Preserve the timber by applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain and gently buffing the brass mounts with a dry cloth to retain the natural patina without stripping historical oxidisation.
