Description

A super quality rare American antique solid sterling silver sugar sifter spoon. It is hallmarked STERLING and I would date it to c1850-1860s. It has been beautifully made having a ornate gilded bowl decorated with a berries and the terminal has been engraved with the single initial D. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits and repairs. It measures approx. 6.75 inches (16.6cm) long by 2.5 inches (6.6cm) wide and weighs 34 grams. A very interesting piece.

FAQs

Preserve antique silver by storing it in tarnish-resistant cloth, washing it gently with mild soap and warm water when necessary, and avoiding harsh abrasive polishes that can wear away fine detailing.

An antique silver sifter spoon can be displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet, mounted in a shadow box, or styled on a dining table as part of a curated tablescape combining historical and contemporary elements.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks, makers marks, and silver purity stamps, alongside natural wear patterns, patina, and the weight and craftsmanship consistent with the period.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver, utilising techniques such as hand-piercing, chasing, and repousse work to create intricate botanical or fruit motifs within the bowl and along the handle.

Sifter spoons, particularly berry or sugar sifters, were designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to sprinkle powdered sugar or caster sugar over fruit and desserts while draining excess juice through pierced bowls.
