Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late Georgian Davenport desk takes the form of a pedestal writing cabinet made from warm brown burr elm with a highly figured grain and an original patina. The sliding upper section holds a sloping, dark green leather-inset writing surface bordered by a three-quarter pierced brass gallery and small turned wooden knobs on the drawers. Below, a tier of graduated drawers with turned wooden pulls occupies one side above Sheraton-style bracket feet on a shaped apron. Measuring 87 cm high, 58 cm wide and 53 cm deep, the compact footprint suits a study, library or home office. One places it against a wall or beside a reading chair as a dedicated correspondence station with concealed stationery storage.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact writing desk named after Captain Davenport, who commissioned the first design in the late 18th century, featuring a slanted writing surface and integrated drawers.

Late Georgian Davenport desks were constructed using native hardwoods such as burr elm, oak, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring leather writing inserts and brass galleries.

Authentic Georgian Davenport desks typically display hand-cut dovetail joints, bracket feet or castors, period brass fittings, and sliding or swivelling writing tops.

A Davenport desk can be positioned in an alcove, home office, or reading corner paired with a compact period side chair and task lighting.

Maintain burr elm by dusting with a soft cloth, applying beeswax periodically, and placing the piece away from direct sunlight or radiators to prevent veneer cracking.
