18th Century Marquetry Inlaid Mahogany Writing Desk

18th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

A fine 18th-century mahogany writing desk, circa 1780 and characteristic of the elegant Hepplewhite period. The rectangular top is beautifully decorated with satinwood banding and intricate marquetry inlay, centred by an oval decorative inlaid panel. The desk retains its original brass handles and locks, with seven drawers featuring finely executed cockbeaded fronts and solid oak, hand-cut dovetailed drawer construction.

Raised on elegant square tapering legs terminating in brass castors, the desk combines excellent craftsmanship with practical proportions and a particularly rich, warm mahogany colour and figuring. A highly decorative and useful example of late-Georgian furniture, suitable as both a writing desk and an attractive period piece for a study or drawing room.

This 18th-century writing desk belongs to the Georgian period and follows the Hepplewhite style. Built from mahogany, satinwood, and brass, it has a warm brown colour with distinct figuring across the timber surfaces. The rectangular top displays satinwood banding, crossbanded borders, and a central oval floral marquetry inlay panel, complemented by seven cockbeaded drawers fitted with brass swan-neck handles and tapered square legs with brass castors. Visible details include the polished wood finish, hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, keyhole escutcheons on the drawer fronts, and the contrasting lighter tones of the inlaid motifs against the darker wood body. The desk measures 79 cm high, 114 cm wide, and 58.5 cm deep in practical proportions. Placed in a study or drawing room today, it functions as a working desk for writing and administration while serving as a period decorative table. Operating as a functional writing station, the kneehole design provides comfortable legroom beneath the central drawer, flanked by three smaller drawers on either side. The tapering square legs lift the body off the floor, creating a balanced silhouette characteristic of late-Georgian workspace furniture. The restrained decorative vocabulary relies on natural wood grain variation rather than heavy carving, focusing attention on the geometric borders and the central floral medallion on the writing surface. This desk integrates easily into traditional home offices, studies, or libraries, offering multiple storage compartments for stationery and documents while maintaining a compact footprint suited to domestic interiors.

Eighteenth-century marquetry writing desks are characterised by refined cabinet making, featuring decorative inlaid wood patterns and structured drawer layouts designed for administrative work.

Cabinet makers primarily utilised dense timbers like Cuban mahogany for the core structure, incorporating contrasting exotic veneers such as satinwood, boxwood, and rosewood for marquetry details alongside solid brass fittings.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, natural wood shrinkage over time, and period-correct iron or brass lock mechanisms.

A marquetry desk can be integrated into a contemporary space as a focal home office piece, paired with modern neutral wall tones and understated desk accessories to highlight the natural wood grain.

Preservation requires regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and occasional applications of clear beeswax paste, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer lifting.
