Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The bombe style is characterised by convex, swelling curves on the front and sides of the furniture, which became highly fashionable in French cabinet making during the rococo period. These pieces typically feature a sloping fall-front writing surface that conceals fitted interior compartments.

Authentic pieces are constructed using solid timber frames with fine wood veneers, such as walnut, laid in geometric parquetry patterns like cubes or herringbone. Traditional joinery includes hand-cut dovetails for drawers and pegged mortise and tenon joints in the frame.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the underside, drawer linings, and backboards for hand-planed surfaces, irregular tool marks, and period-appropriate fasteners. Natural wear patterns, old oxidisation on the brass mounts, and shrinkage cracks in the wood also indicate genuine age.

A bombe bureau serves as a striking focal point when contrasted against minimalist modern walls or placed in a sophisticated study. Its sculptural silhouette and detailed woodwork pair well with clean-lined contemporary seating and neutral textures.

Antique walnut should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood and veneer from drying out and cracking. Maintenance involves occasional dusting with a soft, dry cloth and the sparing application of traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
