Victorian footstools are characterised by solid timber frames, often crafted from mahogany or walnut, featuring low profiles and traditional upholstery designed for comfort and parlor use during the 19th century.

These pieces typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut for the base frames, paired with traditional stuffing materials like horsehair, wool, or cotton wadding beneath top-grade upholstery fabrics.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, joining techniques such as hand-cut dovetails or traditional screws, and the condition of the internal webbing and stuffing, which often show natural age-related patination.

An antique footstool works effectively as an accent piece placed near contemporary sofas or armchairs, adding textural contrast, historical depth, and functional utility to a room.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent wood splitting and fabric fading, occasionally treating the timber with appropriate wax polish.
