Antique Venetian Lattico Glass Claret Jug/ewer Complete with Matching Stand and a Pair of Goblets Circa 1870

19th century
Description

This beautiful set of Venetian lattice glass is amazing. It has a jewel like quality which is very pleasing to the eye. It has an intricate and fine ribboned and platted design that runs throughout each piece in a continuous pattern with a solid strand of vivid turquoise blue alternated with a delicate opaque white which is divided into fine strands forming a ribbon of circles with a stunning high lustre rose gold boarder. It is rare to find a complete set which comprises an elegant ewer or claret jug which stands on a flared foot with raised moulded rings. The body has a bulbous form with a tall slender neck which broadens into a shaped pouring spout from which the elegant curved and raised handle connects and returns onto the body with an impressive lion’s head mask. The ewer includes its original stand and a magnificent pair of large goblets which have a wonderful decorative hollow stem which is decorated again with lion’s head masks which are connected with a foliate wreath and there is a beaded boarder above and below. Each piece has been hand blown with great skill and is finished on the underside with a snapped of pontil which is normal for Venetian glass of this period. These fine pieces are all in excellent original condition with no damage, Circa 1870

Inside the jug, a handwritten piece of paper giving details and provenance from an early 19th-century collection is of interest.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Latticinio, also known as filigree glass, is a traditional Venetian technique originating in Murano during the sixteenth century, characterized by opaque white or coloured glass canes blown into intricate spiral patterns.

These vessels were hand-blown using pre-formed glass rods arranged in moulds, which were fused and drawn into shape before applying decorative handles, rims, and molded stem knops.

Authentic period examples exhibit fine hand-blown characteristics, including subtle pontil scars, slight variations in cane alignment, detailed hand-worked inclusions, and natural wear patterns on the base.

Display the set on a dark wood sideboard, inside a glazed display cabinet, or on a contemporary metal tray to contrast historical glassmaking techniques with clean modern lines.

Wash gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent, avoiding dishwashers or rapid thermal changes, and dry immediately with a lint-free cloth.
