The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, championing traditional craftsmanship, hand-hammered surfaces, and medieval or nature-inspired motifs. Tazzasshallow ritual or display vessels raised on stemswere frequently adapted by silversmiths of this era to showcase individual hand-wrought techniques.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid sterling silver using traditional hand-raising, planishing, and repousse techniques. Artisans hammered the metal from flat sheets to create characteristic surface textures, often soldering separately forged stems, bases, and applied decorative elements together.

Authentic items feature clear hallmarks indicating the assay office, makers mark, and date letter corresponding to the late Victorian or Edwardian periods. Genuine pieces also display subtle irregularities from hand-hammering, hand-chased detailing, and appropriate age-related surface wear rather than machine-tooled uniformity.

This metallic vessel works effectively as a focal point on a dark wood sideboard, dining table centre, or mantelpiece. It contrasts well against minimalist modern surfaces or complements traditional interiors when paired with organic textures like natural stone and dark timber.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a high-quality non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to preserve the original patina and raised details. Avoid harsh chemical dips, store in a low-humidity environment, and handle with clean cotton gloves or bare hands to prevent natural skin oils from accelerating tarnishing.
