Napkin rings became popular in Victorian Britain during the mid-19th century as dining etiquette evolved and middle-class households sought to identify individual linen between washes. They were frequently given as christening, wedding, or anniversary gifts.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as stamping, repousse, engraving, and chasing. They were often housed in fitted presentation cases lined with silk and velvet.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hallmarks, which typically include a makers mark, a lion passant indicating sterling silver, a town mark such as a leopards head for London, and a date letter corresponding to the assay office records.

Silver napkin rings add a touch of reflective metallic sheen and historical texture when displayed on a dining table or placed within a glass cabinet as part of a curated collection of antique silver.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to preserve the hallmarks and patina. Storage in a tarnish-resistant cloth or a fitted presentation case helps minimize oxidation.
