A Fine Pair of Italian Giltwood and Toleware Wall Sconces from the Early 20th Century in the Empire Style.

The sconces are adorned with delicate bow and floret details in giltwood. The backplate is designed as a spray of toleware wheat heads, with the lower leaves crafted in giltwood. The lower section features a small bow clasping the wheat stems, and it terminates with elegant swags and tails.

The S-shaped sconces are embellished with attached leaf details, ending in bobeche and candle nozzles. They closely resemble a set that sold at Christie's, South Kensington, in 2008.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These decorative wall lights feature hand-carved wood accents and shaped sheet metal elements finished with gold leaf or gilded paint, reflecting Neoclassical and Baroque Revival design traditions popular in early 20th-century Italy.

Construction typically combines carved softwoods with hand-cut, shaped sheet iron or steel, finished with water or oil gilding, burnished highlights, and painted candle sleeves.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut metal edges, layered gold leaf showing subtle bole or gesso undertones beneath, visible hand-worked construction on reverse sides, and natural oxidisation on exposed metalwork.

Position these wall lights flanking a mirror above a sideboard, or within wall alcoves to introduce metallic texture and sculpted vertical detail alongside contemporary artwork and plaster finishes.

Dust gently with a soft, dry goat-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or solvents that can dissolve underlying gesso or strip fragile water-gilding.
