Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the Hizen province (modern-day Saga Prefecture). It gained prominence during the Edo period in the late 17th century, specifically designed for export to European markets via the Dutch East India Company.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired white porcelain clay. They are characterised by a distinctive palette consisting of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red (orange-red), and gilt highlights, frequently supplemented with turquoise, green, and aubergine enamels.

Authentic antique Imari can be identified by the weight and thickness of the porcelain body, hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, spurs or firing marks on the base, and characteristic iron red and cobalt blue hues under the glaze. Age-related wear, such as surface scratches and wear to the gilt highlights, also indicates authenticity.

An antique Imari plate introduces rich colour and historical texture to a modern space. It can be mounted on a wall as focal art, displayed vertically on a wooden stand upon a sideboard, or incorporated into a curated tablescape to contrast with minimalist decor.

Antique porcelain requires gentle handling and should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild, non-abrasive soap. Avoid soaking pieces with gilt or enamel decoration, and never place them in a dishwasher or microwave to preserve the delicate overglaze pigments.
