Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Imari porcelain originates from the Hizen province in Japan, specifically centered around the town of Arita. During the Edo period, these wares were exported extensively to Europe through the port of Imari, gaining immense popularity among Western aristocracy for their distinctive palette.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain clay. They are traditionally decorated using an underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, complemented by gilt highlights applied in subsequent low-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-thrown characteristics such as slight asymmetries, footrim imperfections, and pinholes in the glaze. The pigments often show age-related wear, and the unglazed foot rims usually display a smooth, iron-stained clay body known as fire-crackle or speckling.

These pieces integrate well into contemporary spaces when mounted on walls as a focal art collection or displayed on plate stands within minimalist shelving units. Their bold cobalt and iron red tones anchor neutral colour schemes and add historical depth to transitional rooms.

Antique porcelain requires gentle hand washing in lukewarm water using mild, non-abrasive soap. Dishwashers and harsh chemical cleaners must be avoided to protect the delicate overglaze enamel and historical gilt details.
