Wine labels, or bottle tickets, emerged in England during the mid-18th century to identify decanted beverages before labels were printed directly on bottles. They gained immense popularity during the Georgian era, featuring various precious metals and elaborate chased or pierced designs.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, often shaped using piercing, stamping, engraving, and chasing techniques. Makers frequently employed thin gauge silver sheets suspended from matching link chains to wrap easily around bottle necks.

Authentic pieces typically bear clear British hallmarks, including a makers mark, a lion passant indicating sterling standard, a date letter, and a town mark. The presence of rubbed marks and correct period typography are also key indicators of genuine age.

These small collectibles can be displayed mounted in shadow boxes, resting on a mirrored tray alongside crystal barware, or styled neatly on a traditional sideboard. Their polished metallic sheen adds a touch of historical refinement to modern drinks trolleys or cabinets.

Preserve silver labels by storing them in tarnish-resistant cloths or acid-free tissue in a dry environment. Clean them infrequently using a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage historical patination.
