Specialized asparagus servers and tongs gained popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras when formal dining required specific implements for every course to maintain proper etiquette.

These pieces are typically crafted from base metals such as nickel silver or Britannia metal, which are then heavily plated with sterling silver using electroplating techniques.

Authenticity is usually verified through makers marks, hallmark stampings, and hallmarks specific to metal smiths such as Christofle, alongside the weight and quality of the silver plating.

These items look sophisticated displayed on a silver tray, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or utilized as functional decorative objects on a dining table or sideboard.

Silver plate should be cleaned using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage the underlying plating.
