Technical Description
A superb early 18th-century engraved wine glass goblet dating to c1711.
It has a large round funnel bowl engraved with a floral cartouche containing a double-headed eagle with spreading wings, the claws holding a sceptre and sword with a central royal crown between the eagle heads. On the reverse is inscribed ''VIVAT CAROLUS'' (Long Live The King) underlined with elaborate scrolled flourishes.
Sits on a complex stem with a large central teared inverted baluster knop with cushion knops and merese above and below. Conical folded foot engraved with flowers.
The double headed eagle has been associated to the Habsburg dynasty since the 16th century who ruled over much of Europe and Russia on the throne of the Holy Roman Empire from 1440 until 1740. The goblet celebrates the coronation of Charles VI, who became the Holy Roman Emperor in 1711 following the death of Joseph I.
