Description

An exceptional and most rare chest in solid yew wood. Of panelled construction with three panels to the front and four to the lid, a simple thumb nail moulding to the lid and a moulding to the base finishing on stile feet. The original brass escutcheon is present. This remarkable piece is of substantial scale and is made entirely of yew including all back and bottom boards and has a superb patina and original surface. The condition is excellent with the original hinges and lock, the is a split to two top panels and a small hole to one that can be seen in the photographs.

Yew wood is a beautiful timber and can take on a fine patina, sadly this is often stripped off and re polished which gives a very uniform appearance. This beautiful chest has a wonderful patina which has escaped this fate, it graduates from near black through caramel and to a milky bone on the lid. A superb piece of English country house furniture in collectors condition.
