FAQs

Upholstered footstools gained prominence during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as domestic comfort became a priority, often utilised alongside armchairs and chaises longues for resting feet.

Traditional construction typically involves a hardwood frame made from oak, mahogany, or beech, supported by coiled springs, horsehair stuffing or modern foam, and finished with wooden legs and brass castors.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-cut joinery, traditional upholstery techniques such as webbing and hessian backing, and the oxidisation on brass castors and fixings.

A tartan footstool serves as a textural focal point in a contemporary living space, functioning as an extra seat, a coffee table alternative when paired with a tray, or a complementary piece to neutral sofas.

Preservation involves vacuuming the fabric regularly with a soft brush attachment, protecting wooden components with appropriate wax or polish, and avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading.
