Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Faux-rosewood scumbled paintwork: fashionable surface treatment across the 1820s and 1830s.
Turned round feet: standard pattern found on low bookcases around 1830.
Stepped waterfall sides: classic form for domestic shelving in the early 19th century.
Natural rubbing on shelf edges: bare timber exposed through many years of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 19th-century waterfall bookcase stands in a dark brown painted finish across a solid timber construction. The piece provides four open stepped shelves set against a solid backboard, accompanied by distinct side profile cutouts and supported on original turned feet. A small collection of books sits upright on the third shelf from the top. The open front arrangement suits studies, home offices, and living spaces for displaying reading materials and decorative objects. Measuring 115.5 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 33 cm deep, the unit brings period character to interiors without taking up excessive floor space. The surface displays authentic age-related wear consistent with its 1830 origins while maintaining good structural integrity for everyday placement.

FAQs

A waterfall bookcase is a design featuring open shelves that recede in depth from the base to the top tier, creating a cascading or stepped side profile. Popularised in the 19th century, this design allowed larger volumes to be stored on the lower shelves while accommodating smaller books above.

These pieces were commonly constructed from solid woods such as pine, mahogany, or oak, frequently finished with dark stains, varnish, or paint. Hand-cut joinery, solid backboards, and turned wooden legs are standard construction features from this era.

Authentic period examples typically exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular saw marks on the reverse, and traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetails. The graduated shelf proportions, hand-turned feet, and natural surface wear around the shelf edges also indicate age.

Place the unit against a neutral wall in an alcove, hallway, or study to display literature alongside ceramic vessels or framed artwork. Stacking objects according to the graduated shelf depth provides a balanced, structured appearance.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a clean, dry microfiber cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and damp environments, applying a natural furniture wax sparingly to protect the finish.
