Victorian jewellery from the 1880s frequently featured sentimental motifs, incorporation of regional hardstones like Scottish agates, and robust silver or gold settings reflecting industrial manufacturing advancements and romantic revivalism.

These pieces typically utilised sterling silver or low-carat gold as a base, combined with natural cabochon-cut hardstones such as bloodstone, jasper, and agate, often accented with faceted gems like amethyst or quartz.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-engraved detailing, C-clasps or tubular hinge pins without modern safety catches, natural inclusions within the hardstones, and appropriate silver or gold metal oxidisation consistent with age.

An antique brooch can be worn pinned to the lapel of a tailored blazer, fastened at the neckline of a minimalist blouse, or used to secure a wool scarf for a touch of period elegance.

Clean silver gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage porous stones like agate and soft gems like amethyst. Store items individually in tarnish-resistant pouches away from direct sunlight.
