FAQs

Kashmiri papier-mache, known locally as Kar-i-Qalamdan, has roots dating back to the 15th century, influenced by Persian and Central Asian artistic traditions brought to the region.

These pieces are typically fashioned from compressed paper pulp or layers of paper fixed with natural glues, then meticulously smoothed, coated with plaster, and hand-painted before receiving a protective lacquer finish.

Authenticity is usually determined by the presence of hand-mixed mineral pigments, traditional fine-line floral motifs, subtle signs of age in the lacquer, and the distinct weight and rigidity of historical papier-mache.

Such pieces serve as striking focal points on side tables, consoles, or desks, adding texture, rich colour, and artisanal character to both modern and traditional schemes.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, gently dusting with a dry, soft cloth, and avoiding chemical cleaning agents that can degrade the delicate lacquer.
