FAQs

Toleware refers to lacquered or enamelled metalware, typically tin or steel, which became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries for decorative household objects including chandeliers and candle sconces.

These fixtures are traditionally constructed from shaped sheet metal or tin, often reinforced with wire frames and brass components, finished with hand-applied paint and gilding.

Authenticity is typically assessed by examining the type of metal, hand-cut construction methods, the patina of the painted finish, and historical wiring methods if electrical components have been retrofitted.

Such pieces function well as focal points in dining rooms or bedrooms, contrasting against neutral walls or complementing botanical and eclectic interior schemes.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive materials to protect the delicate hand-painted surface and metallic finish.
