Edwardian display cabinets gained popularity during the reign of King Edward VII (19011910), reflecting a lighter, more refined aesthetic than the heavy ornamentation of the Victorian era, often drawing inspiration from 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs.

These cabinets were typically crafted from fine hardwoods like mahogany, satinwood, or rosewood, featuring delicate marquetry and string inlay, hand-carved details, and multi-pane glass doors set within sturdy timber frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints in drawers, older glass characteristics like slight waviness or bubbles, hand-applied veneer, and natural ageing of the timber.

Pairing a dark wood antique cabinet with neutral walls and contemporary minimalist decor creates a striking focal point that balances historical character with modern clean lines.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber splitting, and occasionally treating the surface with a quality microcrystalline wax rather than silicone-based polishes.
