The tantalus originated in the late 19th century during the Victorian era as a locking drinks holder designed to prevent household staff from consuming the masters expensive spirits. It takes its name from mythological figure Tantalus, as the locked bottles are visible yet frustratingly out of reach.

Traditional tantalus sets were typically built using solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, fitted with plated brass or nickel-plated brass hardware and locking mechanisms. The accompanying decanters were crafted from heavy-cut crystal or pressed glass.

Authentic pieces from the Edwardian era feature period-appropriate locking mechanisms, often marked with makers names or patent numbers, alongside hand-cut crystal decanters with numbered stoppers and quality solid timber construction with dovetail joints.

A vintage tantalus can be incorporated into modern living spaces by placing it on a sideboard or drinks trolley to add a touch of heritage craft and functional sophistication to home entertaining areas.

Preserve the wooden frame by applying occasional high-grade beeswax to nourish the timber, while cleaning the glass decanters with warm soapy water, avoiding harsh chemicals on any plated metal fittings.
