This is a Victorian neoclassical five-light candelabra made in Britain around 1880, constructed from silver plate with a bright silver finish. The piece stands on a square stepped base featuring beaded borders, supporting a reeded central column decorated with applied vines and leaves. Four scrolling branches extend outwards from the main shaft, carrying sconces beneath a central fifth light, all topped with crisp Corinthian capitals. Panels on the base display an applied blue enamelled flag with St George's cross alongside a crest showing a stag and a crowned lion, while the sconces are removable and the structure dismantles from the central column. The candelabra measures 58 cm in height with a 42 cm span. It functions practically as a dining table centrepiece or sideboard display piece, holding either three or five candles at a time for formal dining or evening lighting in a traditional interior setting.

FAQs

Popularised during the late nineteenth century, these multi-branched candle holders drew heavy inspiration from classical Greek and Roman architecture, frequently incorporating Corinthian columns and foliate motifs.

These items were predominantly crafted using electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or silver-plated copper, where a layer of pure silver was fused onto a base metal substrate through electrolysis.

Authentic Victorian pieces typically feature maker marks or electroplate stamps such as EPNS, crisp casting along classical scrollwork, and subtle base metal exposure on high-wear surfaces.

Position a multi-branch silver candelabra as a central statement piece on a contemporary dining table or marble sideboard to create visual contrast against clean architectural lines.

Clean silver plate using a soft cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or complete immersion in water to protect the electroplated layer.
