Baroque design, originating in 17th-century Italy, is characterised by dramatic ornamentation, rich gilding, and elaborate carved details such as acanthus leaves and scrolls.

These pieces were typically crafted from hand-carved timber, coated in gesso, and meticulously finished with gold leaf applied over a coloured bole base layer.

Authenticity is determined by examining the tool marks, the natural ageing and oxidisation of the gesso and gilt surface, and the type of wood substrate consistent with the period.

Pair the historic piece with a simple, neutral linen shade to balance its ornate texture, placing it on a sideboard or desk to create a focal point of layered lighting.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, chemical polishes, or direct sunlight to protect the fragile historic gilding.
