A handsome and unusually long antique George III oak chest dating from circa 1800. Chests of this form are sometimes referred to as sword chests – due to its elongated design, allowing for the storage of swords etc. In a lovely mellow honey coloured oak with beautiful figuring it has been constructed with a single plank top above single plank sides and front (a sign of quality) and stands on elegant shaped bracket feet. With brass escutcheon and original steel lock, it has wonderful blacksmith made iron carry handles to the sides and the lid lifts to reveal a candle box and small drawers. The interior is clean, dry and capacious; the lid retaining its original steel strap hinges, which are in good working order. This is an elegant piece that would grace any room, and given its length, perfect to use as a TV stand with added storage or as a window seat or coffee table.
