Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province, and shipped from the port of Imari. It gained prominence during the Edo period in the late 17th century, highly sought after by European nobility for its vibrant palette.

Authentic Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain clay. The traditional palette features underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red, frequently accented with highlights of metallic gold and touches of green or black.

Authentic antique pieces display characteristic hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, dense potting weight, and a smooth, often slightly pitted glaze known as orange peel texture. Foot rims frequently exhibit firing grit or wear consistent with age, and many older pieces feature underglaze blue marks or spur marks on the base.

These vibrant plates lend themselves well to mixed-era interiors, either mounted on a wall as a focal point or displayed on plate stands within shelving units. Their rich colour schemes complement dark wood cabinetry and provide a striking contrast against neutral, textured walls.
