Description

Technical Description

An exceptional full wrythen decorated, 18th century ale glass, dating to c1740. Narrow conical bowl form with shoulder and basal wrythen knops above a conical foot with a very wide fold.

This is the final example from a wrythen ale glass collection we received back in May 2024. We kept what we thought was the best for last. Great form, beautifully balanced, sharp wrythen, good grey metal and a wide fold. Overall, this form doesn't get much better.

Eighteenth-century ale glasses typically feature a tall, narrow bowl designed to retain the head of the ale, often decorated with optical moulding such as wrythen ribs.

These pieces were crafted from glass, often containing lead oxide to increase clarity, weight, and brilliance, which is characteristic of the period.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor surface irregularities from hand-moulding, and wear consistent with age, alongside the specific weight and colour tone of historic glass.

Historic glass objects can be displayed within illuminated cabinet shelving or styled on a sideboard to add texture, history, and subtle reflection to a room.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and dried carefully with a soft lint-free cloth.
