Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The tantalus originated in the Victorian period as a secure container designed to hold decanters of expensive spirits. By locking the stoppers in place with a metal bar, hosts could prevent servants or guests from accessing the contents without authorisation.

Authentic period tantalus sets were typically constructed from robust hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. They incorporated heavy metal locking mechanisms, often made from brass or electroplated nickel silver, alongside lead-cut crystal decanters.

Authentification relies on examining the construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, matching numbered keys for the lock, and the heavy weight and hand-cut facets of the crystal decanters. Maker marks or stamps on the metal fittings also aid identification.

An antique tantalus works well placed on a sideboard, a home bar, or a desk within a traditional or eclectic interior. It serves as a focal point that adds historical character and textural contrast to modern living spaces.

Preservation involves dusting the wood with a soft, dry cloth and applying microcrystalline wax periodically to protect the finish. The crystal decanters should be washed by hand with lukewarm water, avoiding harsh detergents to protect the glass.
