The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century, prioritising traditional craftsmanship, simple forms, and the natural qualities of materials such as oak, often rejecting mass-produced industrial ornamentation.

Pieces from this period predominantly utilise solid native timbers like quarter-sawn oak, featuring visible construction details such as pegged joints, hand-beveled edges, and traditional panelled backs.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit honest construction, heavy timber weight, subtle hand-carved or incised detailing, traditional wood-on-wood joinery, and patination consistent with age and use.

Pairing this item with neutral walls and contemporary lighting allows the warm wood grain to stand out, while balanced shelving arrangements featuring books and ceramics create a curated focal point.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish without sealing the pores.
