This is a scarce, hand-blown, late Georgian, marbled green and white glass wine goblet dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800, and almost certainly blown in Nailsea, although we have seen them attributed to the Wrockwardine Wood Glass House in Shropshire. This is the third of these goblets to have passed through our hands in the last twenty years and they have all been sourced in the West Country, the last one from Nailsea itself. We therefore consider that Nailsea is the likely location of its production.
The goblet is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot consistent with over 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the bottom of the foot.
The goblet has an ovoid-shaped bowl which measures 9.3 cm (3.7 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl thickens as it descends towards the stem. The bowl sits on an inverted baluster stem consisting of a wide, thick angular knop above a short, plain section and a conical foot which measures 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) in diameter. The goblet is 16 cm (6.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. There is a small burst bubble on the inside of the bowl about halfway down from the rim and another even smaller one below it.
It weighs a hefty 525 g. (~ 1 lb 3 oz.).
