Antique candle lanterns were widely used from the 19th through the early 20th centuries for indoor and outdoor lighting before the widespread availability of electricity, serving functional roles in homes, carriages, and maritime contexts.

These pieces were typically constructed from durable sheet metal such as iron or tin, often finished with a dark protective coating, and fitted with glass panes to protect the candle flame from wind.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-soldered joints, weathered patinas on the metal, mouth-blown or early rolled glass panels, and traditional ventilation cowls at the top.

An antique lantern can be placed on a floor, hearth, or large piece of furniture to introduce industrial character and ambient lighting, contrasting effectively with modern minimalist spaces.

Preservation involves gently dusting with a dry microfibre cloth to protect the existing patina, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, and ensuring the metal remains dry to prevent further oxidisation.
