Antique Kazak Rug

19th century
Description

A bold and fabulous Antique Kazak Rug, woven around circa 1880 and in very good original order. Rugs bearing this name come from the highland area of the Caucasus whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They are principally antique, though a limited number are still being made in the area today. This rug has rich deep colours, assertive, geometric drawing and a bold large-scale design.  Please view all the additional images to see the natural dyes up close, and the rugs condition too.

They have earned themselves a reputation of being hard wearing and resistant to damage. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd. Kazak's and rugs from the caucasus are becoming very collectable because of their varied designs and vibrant colours.

Contact us to organise viewing this exceptional rug at home or in our showroom soon.  We are open Monday to Saturday by appointment and our home visits can be arranged throughout the UK on a day and time to suit you.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kazak rugs originate from the Caucasus region, historically crafted by nomadic and village weavers known for bold geometric patterns and vibrant natural dyes.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the structural warp and weft foundations.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied knots visible on the underside, slight asymmetrical variations in the geometry, and subtle colour variations known as abrash.

The bold geometric motifs and rich colour palettes allow these rugs to serve as a grounding focal point in contemporary, minimalist, or eclectic spaces.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a beater bar, rotate periodically to ensure balanced wear, and clean liquid spills immediately with cold water.
