Early 18th century furniture, spanning the late Stuart and early Georgian periods, is characterised by sturdy construction, the prominent use of oak or walnut, and a transition from heavily carved ornamentation to more restrained, classical proportions.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native timbers such as oak, joined using traditional mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, and often featured hand-turned legs connected by stretchers for structural stability.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination of the wood, tool marks left by hand-working, hand-cut joinery, and the presence of shrinkage or wear consistent with age, alongside period-appropriate fixings.

Such pieces function well as versatile accents, serving as low side tables, impromptu seating, or decorative surfaces in living spaces to introduce historic texture and contrast against modern minimalist furnishings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or water on both wood and historic textiles.
