Georgian Pair of Cut Glass Decanters

19th century
Description

This is a pair of late Georgian, mouth-blown cut glass Prussian-shaped spirit decanters dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830.

The decanters are in excellent condition for their age. They show age related wear and tear to the rims of the bases consistent with some 200 years of use.

The decanters each have three applied annular neck rings which are diamond-cut with bands of panel cutting in between. The shoulders are cut with panels above a prism cut, above a band of diamond cutting, above a further prism cut, above a band of half printies and a basal band of finger flutes. The bases measure 8.7 cm (3.5 inches) in diameter and are star cut with eight point radial cutting to the edge. The decanters measure 18.2 cm (7.3 inches) in height without the stoppers and 21 (8.4 inches) in height with the stoppers inserted. Dimensions vary slightly from decanter to decanter as is to be expected of hand-blown glassware. There are the normal minute flea bite chips to the edges of some of the cut facets. There are no significant chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration.

The stoppers are of radially cut mushroom form, and may be the originals. They are of the same metal and age and are a good fit. There is the usual nibbling to the ends of the stopper pegs.

The pair weighs in at 1.2 kg. (~ 2 lb. 10 oz.). Spirit decanters holding 500 ml. of liquid each (to the top of the lowest neck ring).
