A salver is a flat, circular metal tray with or without feet, traditionally used in formal settings for serving drinks, presenting letters, or displaying objects. Originating in the 17th century from the Spanish word salvareferring to the testing of food and drink for poisonsalvers evolved into essential items of British silverware for aristocratic households.

British silver salvers from the mid-20th century were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, meeting the strict fineness standard of 925 parts per thousand. Manufacturing techniques typically involved a combination of traditional silversmithing methods such as spinning or hand-raising the body, followed by applied decorative borders and hand-engraving.

Authentic British silver items must bear official hallmarks stamped by an assay office, such as those in London, Birmingham, or Sheffield. These marks typically include the makers mark, the lion passant indicating sterling silver, a town mark, and a date letter corresponding to the exact year of assay.

A silver salver can be integrated into modern interiors by using it as a reflective centrepiece on a coffee table or sideboard, styled with a curated collection of glassware, small sculptures, or botanical elements. Its polished metallic surface adds textural contrast and catches ambient light, bridging traditional craftsmanship with clean-lined modern furniture.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish without scratching the metal. Avoid harsh chemical dips, and store pieces in a dry environment away from direct sunlight, ideally wrapped in anti-tarnish tissue or flannel.
