Description

A rare antique Georgian mahogany candle shield or screen. These were used in draughty rooms to stop the candles guttering. The majority of screens were made in brass, silver or iron, very few were made in wood, not only because of the fire risk but it would have been expensive to bend the wood, by steaming.

Sometimes these are described as decanter stands, but the few that I have seen have either had wax or burn marks on.

This example is very nice quality, there is a circular burn mark on the base from a candlestick.

It measures 30.5cm h x 18cm w.

A similar one is illustrated in Pintos book of treen.

Date of Manufacture

Opus Antiques has dated this Georgian Candle Shield Screen to the Georgian era.

FAQs

Georgian candle screens were developed in the 18th century to protect delicate facial complexions from the intense heat of tallow or beeswax candles, as well as to shield the flame from draughts in open-plan rooms.

These items were typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often featuring turned wooden bases and curved or adjustable shields.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-accurate joinery, hand-turned wooden components, historic patina, and signs of age-related wear such as minor surface marks and oxidisation of the timber.

An antique candle screen functions well as a sculptural tabletop object on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf, adding historical texture and architectural interest to contemporary spaces.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface without building up residue.
