FAQs

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, characterised by a revival of historicism, heavy proportions, and meticulous craftsmanship using dense woods like mahogany and walnut.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods like pine or oak, incorporating hand-blown or cylinder glass panes within wooden frames.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional wood fixings, minor imperfections in the glass panes, and appropriate patination and oxidisation consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

Pairing a dark wood antique cabinet with neutral wall colours, contemporary lighting, and curated collections of books and ceramics creates a balanced interior scheme that highlights the rich grain of the timber.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally apply microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber surface while avoiding silicone-based polishes.
