A seventeenth-century oak coffer is a traditional storage chest constructed primarily from solid oak during the Stuart period, commonly used for storing textiles, valuables, and domestic goods.

These pieces were typically built from native English oak using pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-split panels, and forged iron hardware.

Authentic pieces feature period tool marks such as adze marks, hand-cut dovetails or pegged joints, shrinkage cracks, and historic ironwork without modern fastenings.

An antique coffer serves as a functional anchor at the foot of a bed, as a coffee table in a living room, or as a statement storage piece in an entrance hall.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood.
