Edwardian novelty silver pin cushions became immensely popular in the early 20th century, produced by prominent silversmiths such as S. Blanckensee & Son and Sampson Mordan. These miniature items often took the form of animals, birds, and household objects, reflecting the periods taste for whimsical and finely crafted desk and dressing table accessories.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid sterling silver, often shaped using stamping, casting, or repousse techniques, and fitted with a stuffed velvet or plush cushion insert. The base is frequently weighted or reinforced to provide stability when pins are inserted.

Authenticity is generally verified through clear British hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver body, indicating the assay office, standard mark, and date letter corresponding to the Edwardian period. Examining the quality of the chasing, the stitching of the velvet pad, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation also aids authentication.

This type of small decorative object works well displayed as a focal point on a mantelpiece, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled atop a stack of books on an office desk. Its metallic finish complements both contemporary minimalist schemes and traditional eclectic interiors.

Silver should be cleaned sparingly with a non-abrasive microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish, taking care to avoid the textile cushion insert. The piece should be kept in a stable environment away from excessive humidity and direct sunlight to prevent the velvet from fading and the metal from tarnishing rapidly.
