Sugar casters, also known as shakers or sifters, evolved in the late 17th century when refined sugar became a luxury commodity used to flavour desserts and beverages. Early examples were typically made entirely of silver, while glass bodies with silver mounts became increasingly popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

These items combine lead crystal or flint glass bodies, often cut or moulded with geometric or botanical motifs, paired with sterling silver or silver-plated pierced lids. The metal top is fitted with a threaded or push-on collar to allow easy refilling while securing the pierced cover.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmark stamps on the silver mount, which indicate the assay office, maker, and year of manufacture. Additionally, period glass features hand-cut facets, polished pontil marks, and appropriate weight and clarity consistent with historical manufacturing methods.

This piece can be displayed on a dining table centrepiece, arranged on a sideboard, or utilized as part of a bar cart display to add a reflective metallic element and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Silver components should be cleaned periodically using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish to remove tarnish, avoiding contact with the glass. The glass body can be washed in warm soapy water and dried thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.
