Manganese delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware decorated with a distinctive purple-brown manganese oxide pigment instead of the traditional cobalt blue, predominantly produced in Dutch and English potteries during the 17th and 18th centuries.

These items were fashioned from a buff-coloured clay body, coated with an opaque white tin glaze known as glaze blanc, and hand-painted with mineral oxides before undergoing a high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit kiln spurs or stilt marks on the base, minor glaze chips along the rim revealing the porous earthenware body underneath, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, and crazing within the tin glaze.

These items can be mounted on walls using secure brass plate hangers as part of a curated gallery display, or exhibited upright on a dresser shelf to introduce historical character and muted colour to modern spaces.

Tin-glazed earthenware is porous and sensitive to moisture; pieces should be kept away from direct sunlight, hand-washed gently with mild soap when necessary, and never submerged in water for extended periods or placed in a dishwasher.
