This is an impressive pair of Georgian engraved and cut sugarloaf decanters dating from the end of the 18th century, c1770.
The decanters are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear commensurate with some 250 years of use.
The decanters are sugarloaf-shaped with mallet-shaped reservoirs below a long neck. The necks are cut with fish-scales above petal flutes. The reservoirs are engraved with two bands of tiny engraved flowers and have basal bands of cut fluting. The reservoirs end in plain polished bases which measure 10.8 cm (4.3 inches) in diameter. They are 23 cm (9.2 inches) in height without the stoppers and 27.5 cm (11 inches) in height with the stoppers inserted.
The stoppers are of clipped disk form and are probably the originals. They are a good fit and are of the right metal and form.
There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious signs of restoration. An impressive and very elegant pair of decanters.
Each decanter weighs 510 g. (~ 1 lb. 2 oz.).
