FAQs

A Bloor Derby cabinet plate refers to porcelain manufactured by Robert Bloor at the Derby porcelain works during the 19th century, known for ornate gilding and hand-painted motifs intended for display rather than dining.

These pieces were typically crafted from soft-paste or bone china porcelain, featuring hand-applied enamel colours and rich gilding fired at high temperatures in specialized kilns.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining factory marks on the underside, evaluating the weight and translucency of the paste, and identifying period-specific hand-painting styles and gilding techniques.

An antique cabinet plate can be mounted on a wall using a specialized plate hanger, displayed upright on a mantelpiece using a stand, or integrated into a curated gallery wall alongside modern art.

Antique porcelain should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent when necessary, avoiding dishwashers, abrasive sponges, and prolonged soaking to protect delicate gilding and enamels.
